U.S. Olympic qualification for snowboarding and freeskiing will be among the toughest of all sports. It begins in Breckenridge, Colo., this week.
The Dew Tour iON Mountain Championships, which run Wednesday through Sunday, are the first of five stops in this trials process. The others are on the U.S. Grand Prix schedule — Copper Mountain, Colo., Northstar, Calif., Park City, Utah, and Mammoth Mountain, Calif.
The five events will determine Olympians in snowboard halfpipe and the new Olympic events of snowboard slopestyle and ski halfpipe and ski slopestyle. The Olympic rosters are expected to be announced Jan. 22.

Thanks! Just posted
Shaun White just made major headlines in support of LGBT athletes.
Undeniably the world’s most famous snowboarder, this two-time Olympic gold medalist is currently training on a special halfpipe built just for him near Perisher resort in the Australian Snowy Mountains. During a video interview with Yahoo7 Sports, he was asked about Russia’s recent “anti-propaganda” law that’s being used to oppress Russia’s LGBT population. Here’s what he had to say:
"It’s a tough scenario. You get these athletes that are just as competitive and they’re living their lives and they’re pouring every single thing into this competition. And just that added pressure of being alienated, I’m just not a big fan of that. It’s not like it’s up to me to change the rules or anything, but I just feel for them on that front."
As the world’s largest club for LGBT skiers and snowboarders, we applaud Shaun White for standing up for LGBT equality. As he knows, being gay shouldn’t be a factor when you’re talented enough to proudly represent your home country on the world’s greatest athletic stage. It’s inspiring when influential figures like Shaun speak up to remind the world that LGBT snowboarders can shred with the best of ‘em, and we deserve the chance to win Olympic medals and hug our loved ones in the stands without being sent to jail for revealing who we love.
We’re proud of what Shaun White had to say, and encourage him to add his name to Athlete Ally’s powerful Uphold Principle 6 campaign.
